THE ART OF
COMBINING

Breeding is the art of combining the best product characteristics.

Breeding is the art of combining the best characteristics. Characteristics that the eventual buyer finds important such as color, shape, and appearance. But characteristics like durability, disease resistance, and suitability for energy-efficient, heat-tolerant, and automated cultivation are becoming increasingly important. Deliflor leads the way in data-driven breeding and the use of DNA techniques and has advanced lab facilities for testing, preservation, and further development of varieties. Varieties are extensively tested under the most modern cultivation conditions and in various climatic conditions before new varieties are approved for market introduction. By testing varieties at our own locations in Colombia and Japan and with partners in Southern Europe, we obtain excellent information about the performance of a variety worldwide.

DATA-DRIVEN BREEDING AND MARKER TECHNOLOGY

Marker technology, tissue culture, and disease testing are activities that are rapidly gaining importance within breeding and propagation. Not only aimed at delivering the best possible product to our customers. But also to make the breeding process even more efficient and faster. Molecular markers help us to breed faster and more targeted on certain variety characteristics. This way, we develop varieties that meet changing cultivation and climatic conditions and are more sustainable in terms of energy and resistance to diseases and pests, further reducing the use of crop protection.

ADVANCED LAB FACILITIES

In our high-tech laboratory facilities, we conduct disease tests to (preventively) check whether plants are infected with viruses, bacteria, or fungi in order to ensure that the cuttings used for crossing or sold are disease-free. Through tissue culture, plants grow in tubes/trays on a solid nutrient medium, rich in various nutrients, vitamins, and plant hormones (also called in vitro). This way, we make new varieties suitable for growing into larger quantities.
